Shop Visit: DD Cycles San Francisco
“The shop has been in this space for 40 years. Before that it was across the street.
Special notes:
-1984 Battaglin TT bike with period Sidis and helmet
-Bar end shifter routed to front brake on a track bike (one of many set up like this). The shop owner, Michael, told me that road racers trained on their fixed gears in the offseason. They’d ride up Mount Tam, then click on a few stops of front brake for the descent. I’ve ridden up and down Tam on my track bike and can tell you that many sections would be hairy without a brake. With quill stems, it was easy to pull the whole cockpit and front brake and replace it with a track-ready setup for velodrome racing. The pictured bike is a Stainless Steel Somec made in Italy.
-Mike broke that Campagnolo Strada crank in an uphill sprint. He recently found it in a bin. He remembers crashing hard.
That’s it for now! Peace -”
