There were a couple levels of bike lock safety in the late 1990’s:

Real Easy City– Lean your bike up against the building and go in.
Easy City-Lock your wheel to your frame, lean your bike up against the building and go in.
Medium City– U-Lock your frame to a sign post or bike rack. Nuts or locknuts on your wheels.
Hard City– U-Lock frame and front wheel to a sign post or bike rack. Hardware store lock on rear wheel. Toe Clip strap or similar around saddle rails to frame.
Extra Hard City-Chain around frame and front wheel to lightpole or something smaller. Hardware Store lock around rear wheel and frame. Wrap your frame in electric tape if its fresh. Short bike chain around saddle rails attached to frame.

Or you might have some tricks to get around all of the locking stuff. Locks suck.

If you’re a real g you could go lock-free all day in an extra hard city protected only by PMA.
